FIFA suspended the All India Football Federation on the country's independence day

FIFA suspended the Football Federation of India on the country's Independence Day (15 August 2022) for "undue influence on third parties" with immediate effect. The suspension of the AIFF means the U-17 Women's World Cup, which was due to start in the country on October 11, will not go ahead as planned. The AIFF is in disarray and run by administrators after former chief Praful Patel stayed in office beyond the end of his term without holding new elections, which the courts have invalidated. FIFA said in a statement the suspension would remain in effect until the All India Football Federation (AIFF) regained full control of its day-to-day operations. What this can mean: India barred from participating in AFC Asian Cup 2023. India's national teams are barred from international matches including planned friendly tournaments in Vietnam.
